International Sex Workers’ Rights Day 2015 in NOLA!

Well, because we like to do our own thing, we at SWOP-NOLA decided that, instead of celebrating International Sex Workers’ Rights Day with the rest of the world today (March 3rd), we’re gonna celebrate this Saturday, March 7th.

At 3pm, to be exact. At City Park. Email swop.nola@gmail.com for the exact location.

Free Crawfish/Potluck/Clothing Swap!!

There will also be other food. It’s a potluck, but you’re not required to bring shit (other than your sexy little/big self, you!).

Bring clothes you don’t want anymore. One harlot’s trash is another’s treasure. We should have a variety of sizes, from petite to voluptuous.

International Sex Workers’ Rights Day 2015 in NOLA!

From the Facebook event:

“Hi everyone, It’s that time again. We are having our annual meet and greet for sex workers and allies in the park.

The weather is supposed to be beautiful this weekend so feel free to bring a dish or a beverage or just bring yourselves!

Since Lent is our ‘official’ New Year here in NOLA we figured now would be a good time to clean out the closets, bring the clothes or costumes you no longer need and maybe find a new treasure.

We will be meeting in City Park. PM or email us for the location (swop.nola@gmail.com), and for screening purposes, please include a sentence or two about yourself. Hope to see you there!”

Also SWOP-Shreveport/Bossier City is having its first meeting tonight. Here’s the Facebook event:

International Sex Workers’ Rights Day and SWOP-Shreveport/Bossier City Inaugural meeting – March 3 2015

“We’ll have the inaugural meeting of our chapter, with some take-away projects and committee assignments. Can follow meeting a sex worker film screening or social after the meeting.”

Happy International Sex Workers’ Rights Day 2015!!

Accomplishments in 2014

What we accomplished in 2014

  1. Held official meetings about once monthly.
  2. Held several unofficial, often impromptu meetings throughout the year.
  3. Offered our input via our responses to an Amnesty International-distributed questionnaire about experiences of sex workers. This questionnaire was part of an attempt by Amnesty International to listen to sex workers themselves before making an official decision regarding their position on the decriminalization of sex work.
  4. Sponsored a FREE film screening for International Sex Workers Rights Day 2014
  5. Participated in the NOLA Pride Parade (see June update)
  6. Started on list of Legal resources for sex workers
  7. Added to the existing list of Sex Worker-friendly healthcare providers/counselors
  8. Provided a FREE Sex-workers-only self-defense workshop at NOLA Shaolin-Do
  9. Co-sponsored (with Patois New Orleans International Human Rights Film Fest) screening of Lizzie Borden’s “Working Girls” at the Zeitgeist
  10. Supported (via donation, promotion, and attendance) BreakOut’s TDOR Kiki for a Cause – Benefit Show for BreakOut! at Lucky Pierre’s
  11. Held IDEVASW (International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers) 2014 event in NOLA. Marched through French Quarter, engaged with the public, distributed ~600 promo packs of safer sex materials, instructions for use, and SWOP-NOLA promo flyers
  12. Updated and reorganized general info related to the safety of sex workers.
  13. Maintained various info and resources about safety issues specific to NOLA and the places local sex workers work, made that info available to verified sex workers. Facilitated exchange of safety info among local sex workers.
  14. Overdose prevention (can’t get too specific with this, but look up “opioid overdose prevention”): distributed supplies and instructions
  15. Helped local sex workers (at their request) transition from criminalized to non-criminalized form of sex work
  16. Social support of local sex workers
  17. Public outreach through flyering, social media, etc.
  18. Recruitment of local sex workers through word-of-mouth
  19. Educated local sex workers about lesser-known aspects of Louisiana law as it relates to sex workers.
  20. Assisted local sex worker in choosing and enrolling in inpatient rehab program.
  21. Directed local current and former sex workers seeking help we don’t/can’t provide to other organizations or programs that could provide the help they needed.
  22. Whorecast!
  23. Drove over and hand-delivered condoms and lube to sex workers taking last-minute appointments 😉

IDEVASW (International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers 2014 in NOLA!

Well, Bourbon Street didn’t let us down. Our 2014 December 17th IDEVASW (International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers) event was bigger and maybe even better than IDEVASW 2013 (I only say “maybe,” because we didn’t get to see any miniature horses).

And check out the awesome writeup by Missy Wilkinson with the Gambit: Blog of New Orleans: “Sex workers are human.”

Blurry phone pics below! It’s hard to take phone pics while walking and handing out hundreds of these things to locals, tourists, and everyone in between.

  • Legal Resources

On the website, under “Resources” —> “Legal” (swopnola.org/category/legal), we’re putting together a list of relevant legal resources. This includes:

    • Louisiana Lawyers & Legal Resources Relevant to Sex Work: This is mostly Louisiana criminal defense lawyers who represent people with prostitution and prostitution-related charges, plus lawyers who have experience representing people in the biz (escorts, strippers, etc.) in Family court, civil court, etc.: Louisiana Lawyers, Legal Resources Relevant to Sex Work
    • Free & Low-Cost Legal Resources and Attorneys in Louisiana (not necessarily related to sex work): Lots of free and/or low-cost legal resources, attys, resources for representing yourself, where to find forms for civil/family court, etc.: Free & Low-Cost Legal Resources and Attorneys in Louisiana
    • General info on Louisiana laws, your rights, etc.: laws regarding prostitution, what to do if arrested, etc. etc.: General info on Louisiana laws, your rights, etc.

So please add to these lists if you know of anything.

  • Upcoming Events

We have lots of stuff coming up, so we made an event calendar.  Enjoy!

  • SAVE Act

Have you heard of the SAVE (Stop Advertising Victims of Exploitation) Act? Basically, now they’re going after ad sites like Backpage, Eros, etc. AND social networking sites under the guise of “saving the children” (they’re saying that “street gangs” use Backpage to “sell children” for sex). If this passes, we will be required to submit personal identification info not only to the sites we use for advertising, but to other sites that aren’t necessarily advertising sites, but are used by escorts for networking with clients, etc. And, as we saw earlier this year, the FBI can easily take over any damn website they please and access any and all info the company is saving on its servers (a few months ago, ad sites in California were seized by the FBI recently (indictment here) and it escalated from there with arrests, raids of the site owner’s home and prostitution charges (video)Official press release here.

Naughty New Orleans Network

Social meetups for local providers, dancers, escorts, anyone in the biz, etc. Anyone working in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, or the rest of Louisiana (or even along the Gulf Coast, if you want to drive that far) is welcome. No clients, no outsiders (unless otherwise stated).

On hiatus, because we’re all super busy and planning stuff is hard.

If you want to take this on, awesome! Let us know.

We can help with funding and refreshments, etc. For a lot of us, paying for stuff is easier than planning it. We are hoping and praying that’s not true for all sex workers in New Orleans, because we would love it if someone came along who really, really likes planning stuff
